In-store Merchandise Localization at IEEE

In-store Merchandise Localization with Ultrasound, Smartphones, and AI at the 20th IEEE International Conference on Mobile Data Management

On June 10-13, 2019, Magnus Oplenskedal, Ph.D. candidate at Forkbeard Technologies, will present his work on a Product Localization System at the 20th IEEE International Conference on Mobile Data Management in Hong Kong.

Together with academic supervisors and Forkbeard, Magnus has been developing a system to localize merchandise in retail stores. This has been made possible by using the Forkbeard Phone-FUELTM technology.

The system uses anonymous data collected from the users’ smartphones while shopping to intelligently create a “digital map” of the locations of all products. Utilizing AI algorithms, the system will “learn” and automatically adapt to alterations in the store’s layout as well as when new products are introduced in the store. The precise location of products by aisle, rack and shelf can be used to build services which wil assist shoppers and stores in various ways. For example, in-store promotions, wayfinding algorithms, shopping guidance, in-store journey vs. shopping analytics, and more.
